Before you make any commitment to move to the Ft McMurray area check out the availability of housing and its costs as it could be challenging to find a place to live and very expensive when you do,lot of people resorting to living in Rv's and campers due to scarcity of residences.

Yup the average cost of a home in Ft Mac is more than Calgary or Edmonton... Though most the jobs that are worth while up there will have you living in a camp for a split (21/7, 15/6, 7/7 etc)

Forget FT Mac and look into what is happening in Saskchewan. My son in law work there and half the workers are American. He's a fitter and they tell him they have 40 years of work for him.

Where have you been? Fort McMurray is so ten to twenty years ago!

Apply IN THE U.S. to American companies doing business there, and then have them send you there.
by-passes the whole immigration thang and that's been done since the fifities. Like it or not, American companies still dominate the high end of the oil management business. (except for BP, whew!)

oh, one more thing: YOU BETTER BE BETTER THAN GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO.

McMurray is like you saying you want to join a biker gang. The club is somewhat exclusive and it's not for lightweights; you'll get shaken out and fast. Consider something more relaxing, like the French Foreign Legion!

Things are picking back up again in Calgary - why don't you look there?

Agree with the other poster - Get a job with american company, then try to transfer up to Canada division.

Oh Canada! Canada Toughens Stance on Business Visitors
May 24, 2011 02:45
by Shanon R. Stevenson

Gone are the days when an employer could send its U.S. citizen employees to the Canadian border with a passport and a simple explanation of the business purpose of the trip. Effective April 1, 2011, Citizenship and Immigration Canada is taking a more aggressive stance against the often abused NAFTA Business Visitor category. Employers cannot use the business visitor category in lieu of obtaining a Canadian work permit for employees who will be actually working in Canada as defined by Canadian immigration laws.

Armed with greater powers to scrutinize employer compliance with immigration regulations, immigration officials now have the discretion to request additional information on employer compliance and the power to impose greater penalties for noncompliance, including debarment from hiring foreign workers for two years.

Not true. Any Canadian can come to America and compete for the jobs that illegal Mexican aliens do, and employers will be happy to have them. Mow lawns for $30 a day, when can you start?
