While obtaining quotes to possibly change carriers I became aware of a charge for approximately $6 to add towing and road service to an auto insurance policy. I called and asked about this. The agent on phone told me they will provide towing or road service on the insured vehicle at no charge. Could I safely not renew AAA? You know the old saying "If it sounds too good to be true it's not!!"
But I've kept it in my auto policy too, and have used it a few times for lockouts (three times in three years), it's legit. You lose some of the AAA benefits, but those are, for the most part, replaced by Google maps.
Check your policy for towing limits before you cancel AAA. One insurance company I had limited reimbursement for a tow to $75. If you are driving between Reno and Auburn CA and your car breaks down the minimum charge for a tow truck to roll is $250 and they want that just for showing up =/
AAA isnt just towing, its DMV services, maps, merchant discounts etc. If you dont need or use them then the $6 tow is probably good enough. Just remember towing limit is often only 15 miles so if you do a lot of long distance driving it may be wise to keep AAA since they tow up to 200 miles (depending on membership level).
I tried a few different alternatives. But I never dropped AAA coverage. Most of these roadside aren't realky that great and they are very limited in what they offer imo. I stick yo AAA. I have the highest one they offer. Premier I think. Car, Rv and motorcycle. I don't ride anymore do I dropped the motorcycke coverage
I discontinued the AAA just this year and added the Travelers Insurance Roadside Assistance option. That used to just be "Towing and Labor" coverage which reimbursed you for some towing costs, but it looked pretty similar to what AAA offered. Hopefully their network of towing operators is half-decent. We were really not using any of the other services and it was becoming a bit too expensive.
