On the other side of the coin,we have been married 60 years,we have purchased a small home in of all states CT to be with family in waning years but do not know if we can afford the move.
We have daughter and husband with whom we would like to be near, they have worked many years but earnings are limited, they would not be able to afford home, maybe only with my wife in this home when I pass.
Ct extremely expensive,we are comfortable now.
We are between a rock and a hard place, time moves to fast.
Every one of these stories I read moves me a step closer to our own pre-emptive cashing out / downsizing move. Our next move will be to our "aging in place" home. A home that already has significant features allowing home care to proceed smoothly, walkable to many things we need or want to do (while we still can), and, easy to work on for additional changes and upgrades. We recycle or discard one item every day. Etc.
I like what my brother and wife did when they moved to assisied living after over 50 years in home. There answer was a dumpster set in driveway, told children they had 2 weeks to take what they wanted.
It was a hard choice for them but saw the hand writing on the wall.
My wife and I are in the same boat at 80 plus, but not as well off.We do have a collection of antiques and East Lake furniture and will somehow have to sell it and donate it.
eBay is our friend, and charities are next in line. After that, I really like this dumpster ultimatum concept you've highlighted.
