Can anyone here recommend alternative brands to Ensure nutritional "shakes"? (my husband, who has cancer, hates Ensure) or even homemade nutritional shake recipes?

Try Premier Protein. You can get it at the grocery store, GNC, or Amazon.

Many, no, most people I know prefer Walmart's Equate brand of nutrition shakes.

You can buy them online and either pick up at the store when you go for husband's treatment, or have it shipped. If you have it shipped, it is cheaper if you have it shipped to a business rather than your residence. So if a store, farm, ranch, anyone with a business name would accept it, it would save you some if there isn't a Walmart where you take him for treatment.

And once you figure out which flavors he likes you can order ahead and be sure they will have it.

The Premier website also has smoothie recipes. I mix it with frozen fruit for smoothies. You can also add fiber or Miralax if necessary. Adding turmeric and ginger to tropical fruit makes a good anti-inflammatory smoothie.

I really like the Atkins shakes. I used to enjoy the SlimFast shakes, but something changed and they upset my stomach now.

A friend had surgery for esophageal cancer and could not eat solid food. All the variations of liquid protein things made her sick. She used a Vitamix to liquefy a regular meal. You have to add water. This even worked in a J feeding tube. Experiment to find the best combos. Much healthier than the sugar laden drinks.

Boost - put it in the freezer and let it get a little icy then shake very well

Ask at the cancer center for coupons or sometimes they even have some samples for you to take home and try before you buy.

Loads of Protein Isolate, No or low cholesterol, out there. Stimulant and sugar free as well.

Here is the brand I use, iso sensation 93.

Great deal on the 5lb bucket BOGO at allstarhealth.com

30grams of protein per 32gram serving. Absolutely no fillers. Tested as one of the best proteins.

Years ago, when my mom was in the hospital and unable to eat - and she also hated Ensure - I used to make her strawberry cheesecake shakes. I used vanilla whey protein, half & half, frozen strawberries, cream cheese, a little sugar, and a squirt of lemon juice. She adored them, and they kept her going. Her doctors approved, especially since she couldn't get her calories through solid food due to pulmonary difficulties.

You could also puree soups, since most people like savory as well as sweet.
