We used to have Class As - now we are downsizing to a Class C. No jacks, but this one still has slides.

We are well versed on the cat/RV prep list. "Count the cats" is repeated multiple times throughout the "ready/set/go" and "ready/set/camp" checklists. With the latest RV, I think they will be herded into the bathroom until the slides are in place.

Default Oh - the Irony of it all

Two of our cats were actually adopted at RV parks - but the two youngest haven't RV'd before. At least we have a well thought out plan this time, transitioning our pets to the RV the first time around was quite an adventure. We know how to keep the cats safe and the RV in good shape.

I'm so excited I can't stand it.
Picked up the RV - it's AWESOME. We found it on the internet and purchsed sight unseen. We were shocked to find that everything works - it was road ready. So we picked up some cats, including the elderly cat that I mentioned above and took off on a Christmas trip.

35 minutes into the trip, he collapsed. Apparently the quick change in elevation was too hard on his heart. My husband turned around and we headed to our regular vet. It was a windy area and driving was tough. Then the awning blew out like a sail. Somehow, even stopping to fix the awning, we made in there in 20 minutes.

We hated watching him suffer and thought we were going to the vet to euthanize him. WRONG! He is back at home and doing just fine. He's on heart meds and enjoying being spoiled.

So - here we are. We bought an RV to travel with the cats and just about killed the little guy! From now on, he stays at the vets.

I'm glad he's okay. What a scary time that must have been, however if it brought out into the open a health problem you didn't know he had, it's a good thing. The silver lining, I guess you could say.

Did the other cats do okay?

He was hyperthyroid and got radioactive Iodine treatment, as he got a severe reaction to the standard meds. Hyperthyroid cats are prone to HCM heart issues. We thought we had skirted this as his lifetime heart murmur completely disappeared with the Iodine treatment. The hyper-T did mask a kidney problem and the treatment unmasked it.

He had heart failure and a plueral effusion. He is on diuretics and an ACE-inhibitor. So now we walk a careful line between too much and too little fluids. Be he is with us and very much his old self!

We did take the two cats that had had never been RVing. One hid quietly. The other one had me in stiches until our crisis. He was standing in the bathroom sink stretched up tall, facing the mirror. He was pawing frantically and SCREAMING, nonstop. I felt bad for the guy, but couldn't stop laughing.

I tossed a blanket on the bed and stuck him under it. He nervously nested there. Next trip will be a very close weekend trip. I will take them in the car and place them in the RV. That should be a little less traumatic for them.

Maybe it's a good thing you found out about his heart condition. Better it happened on the road than at home when he was alone with no one to help him.

OMG My heart was in my throat! I can't even imagine what it was like for all of you.

So glad he is o.k. and safe.
