Upsetting just hearing this. This is why I'd NEVER take my cats with me to places like this. Especially if I were traveling with kids (or adults) who leave doors open- I would be a nervous wreck the whole time. I think cat owners should know better than to rely on people to always close doors. This can easily happen. It's careless in my opinion.
I think it's mostly children who leave the camper doors open. Campers seem to come in two age groups. Retire seniors like my husband and myself, and young couples with younger children.

And not coming back to look for them?? At least have them microchipped.. (though I know that depends on someone finding them and taking them somewhere to be scanned.)
Yes, it does and for some reason few of these cats will come to people. They seem to get fearful and wont let anyone touch them. They make it hard for people to save them. That little calico that our friend took was the first I've seen that came right up to people and loved being carried around like a baby doll.
I think I have the same kind of t-shirt harness for my cat! You bring up a very good point about the harness / carrier, Jasper. I also know a few people who travel this way & I think that's the only way I'd do it.
Our three kitties are either in their carriers or in the RV. We're very careful that the RV doors are kept closed and latched at all times. But accidents can happen. If Zebulon ever got out, and he shows no interest it the outdoors, I'm sure he would never let anyone get near him. The girls are friendlier. All of them are chipped. They go everywhere with us, even if it's just a long weekend at a local campground. We couldn't bear to go off without them. They're like our children.
That IS the harness I use! I love the leopard print
