Wasn't quite sure if this was more of a cat or dog related thread, but here goes...
Our current setup is that the cats' food/water & litter boxes are in our basement. We have a gate set up so that only the cats can jump to get behind the gate into the room. This keeps the dogs out of the cat designated area indefinitely. I think it's a really great setup, problem is we're moving! And I don't think our new house will have anywhere similar to set up a cats only area. As it is, we're having a lot of trouble trying to decide where to put the litter boxes, never mind taking the dog's access into account... And let's not forget how slow the cats are at eating, and how ravenous and greedy the dog would be if I let him

So my question is, for those who have both cats & dogs, how do you avoid rover from munching on some kitty-treats (of either kind)? Where are your litter boxes and food bowl for the cats located?

We feed the cats on our long double vanity in the master bath but the litter box is available to the dogs so I have to make sure there are no snacks in there many times throughout the day. Also we have to isolate the cats when we feed the dogs so I holler "Cat Wranglers" and the kids know to get the cats in the bedroom while we feed the dogs. It can all be difficult sometimes-especially keeping the dogs out of the litter boxes.

Our cats would eat all the dog kibble if I let them and now with Oscar on his special diet it is extremely important he eats nothing except his special food.

When I had both cats and dogs I had a gate across the kitchen doorway. This was at another place where I lived. That kept the dogs out of the kitchen and hence the litterpans, food bowls and trash container. It was a large kitchen so it worked out fine. Litterpans at one end and food and water at the other.

The garage is the domain of my cats. There's a cat door installed at the bottom of the door leading in. I don't use my garage for parking my car normally, so this works out well.

It is especially difficult for us to keep dogs and cats and the food and litter trays separated because our cats are bigger than the dogs

Then use a gate made of hardware cloth. The cats can jump over it and the dogs cannot.
