Anyone used a pet moving/transport service? (safe, kitty, tuna)

I've got a move from Louisville KY to Sacramento CA (about 2230 miles) coming up and, due to some rather unfortunate news about my car, I can't drive. However, I've got my two fur babies coming with me. So, now I'm trying to scramble and come up with a way to get them there and I need some advice.
I've been looking online at some of those pet moving/transport services but it's hard to go on those testimonials alone. Has anyone used a service like that? If so, which one? I would REALLY like to avoid ones that put the kitties in the cargo hold, that just doesn't sound safe to me.
