Our Sadie started overgrooming about a year ago. It got bad pretty quickly, so off to the vet we went. Nothing medical, so we decided to try Prozac. It did the trick and the overgrooming stopped. ..

Fast forward about 10 months. I suspected at her annual appointment that she'd likely need a dental (she did). But a surprising thing was that she had lost about 1.5 pounds! We had blood work done (everything was normal) and she had a dental within the month (poor girl's teeth were in pretty bad shape and she lost 4 teeth).

She recovered very well from the dental so we started weaning her off the Prozac. Suddenly, she was a new cat! Eating, not hiding, purrs a lot more often.

I did some searching and found that a common side effect of Prozac in cats is seriously decreased appetite. I had no idea. Our vet didn't mention any side effects. While some of her weight loss was likely due to her teeth, we think most of it was from the drug.

Spreading the word about this side effect. While Prozac has its place, every drug has side effects and please do your homework! (And it's a reminder that bad teeth can change a cat's personality too.)

We are happy that Sadie is doing so well now.

Thanks for the PSA. Good info to know.

And glad Sadie is doing well, btw.
