I'm moving into a new apartment soon and it has lots of stairs and overlooks. I'm wondering if I will need to take precautions with my cat or will he know not to jump from those high heights? Do cats have an instinct to not jump from a height that is too dangerous?

That's a pretty cool apartment. But yes, your cat should have some sense of how high is too high. You can't count on that 100% - or at least I never felt comfortable with my 26th floor balcony. But other people in my high rise used to have their cats out all the time with complete trust in them.

Most cats are only limited (height-wise) by how high they think they can jump. Some cats prefer to stay on the ground, so climbing/jumping isn't an issue, but the majority of them will like to be high-up. Cats do not have a fear of height like we do, even though it may be too high to be safe for them.
You have a reason for concern, and if you can't train them to stay off of those risky places, then do everything you can to limit or block access to them. Cats have been known to fall from great heights and survive, even with few injuries. But that's rare, and don't count on it. Good luck.
