I have 3 cats, and one is significantly older than the others - 18yo vs 5yos. I want her to be able to come and go from my bedroom as she pleases, but not let the younger cats in so she has a sanctuary of sorts.
That on its own would be easy, but the younger cats also tend to slip between my legs and get in the bedroom and refuse to be shooed out, so I need to be able to set it up for controlled-access entry, but free exit.
I've found a cat door that meets those needs, but read in reviews that it's easy for cats to lift the flap from the locked side and get in anyway, and i know my younger cats would figure this out in not time.
In short, I need a pet flap to allow:
-only the old lady in
-anyone out
-mischief-proof from the outside, even for determined cats
I prefer a magnet-key based door, as I don't need to worry about a power supply.
Yeah, James is right, a door will not discriminate and there is no way to make it so only your older kitty can get through it.
Maybe the solution is to just let the older cat into the bedroom, they do not need a lot of space, especially as they get older, and she may be very happy being in there by herself. If you put one of those electric scat mats in front of the door, on the outside, your other two will learn very quickly to avoid it and stay back from the door.
We used that one successfully. Only the cat that wore the collar was able to go through the door. No one else ever figured out how to break in. Took a few weeks to train her on using it, but after that, it worked great.
