My daughter (finally) moved into her own little condo and really wants a pet. When she and her sister were both home, we had always had cats until we found out she was very allergic. The family cat we had was moved into the heated breezeway and was indoor/outdoor anyway. After she died, we did not have pets for years. When we finally considered one, found out daughter was now also allergic to dogs. We did get a dog breed considered hypoallergenic (shih tzu) and he is a great little guy and no allergies at all.
Well my daughter really misses him and wants a dog or cat. But she is a teacher and would not be able to let a dog out for potty during the day. It would be a long wait til she got home and doesn't seem fair to the pup. So a cat would be much better but she has allergies. My question is, has anyone who is allergic to cats gotten one of the breeds that is "considered" more hypoallergenic (i.e. Siberian or whatever?) She did her homework on cats and the current literature said that longer haired females may also have low allergenic qualities. Finally, Purina came out with a cat food a few years ago that is supposed to significantly cut down on allergens in cat owners. Anyone ever try it or have any luck?
I have used a homeopathic preparation that was very helpful in reducing cat allergy.
What really worked for me was changing my cat's diet to remove all corn and soy. My allergy went away completely with that change in diet.
Maybe she could look for a rescue in her area & see if she can foster a cat & see if she is Ok with it. If they click & she has no problems, cat has a home
My aunt and cousin are allergic to cats, and they've always had Cornish and Devon Rexes without any issues... they're pretty expensive, though, and everyone will react differently. Keep in mind that HYPOallergenic only means LESS allergenic, so HMMV.
If she is more interested in a small dog, does her condo have a secure balcony or patio? If so, she could always get a "potty patch" and a dog door. That's what I did for my old dog when we lived in apartments together. He was fine, and he wasn't even a small dog! And I've always worked full-time outside the home.

Thanks for all the suggestions. My daughter wants to save a life so she may try the foster route.
