Hi, I apologize if this has been discussed before. I did a few searches and couldn't find any topics on this. I've moving into a new house in a few weeks. The previous owners had one indoor house cat. Fortunately there is only carpeting on the second floor, the first floor is all hardwoods and tile. I have an 18 year old female who is very territorial and who I'm afraid will pee on the carpet if I don't clean or shampoo it before she gets there. She has already peed on a very nice sofa that I've had to clean numerous times, and a nice wool carpet in my old dining room. She started doing this after we brought home two male kittens from a shelter. Obviously she is marking her territory. We have tried to do the obvious, and make sure there are plenty of litter boxes where we live.

Do professional carpet cleaners or even just the ordinary rug machines that cleaning services use do a good job of getting rid of another cat's smell? I've had poor results myself using those enzyme liquids to get rid of urine smell. It doesn't seem to work very well. Maybe I'm just not doing it right. Have people had good results with the no-mark sprays? Has anyone tried the powder products to get rid of urine?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I haven't researched it other than look at the ad linked on this page but it sounds interesting and worth more research: Homepage for superior odor elimination solutions from Odor Medic

Can you block off the second floor of the house and keep your cat on the ground level for a while until she gets acclimatized to the move and you have a chance to really deep-clean and otherwise treat the carpeting up there?

Good luck!

Whatever you do - clean first with COLD water. Hot water will lock in the scent.

Thanks for the suggestions. The idea about blocking off the 2nd floor is a good one. I could get a pet gate that might keep my cats on the first floor. The males are good jumpers but that might be enough to keep our 18 year old female from going to the carpeted area. And, it might give me a way to have a quiet office space up there without her begging to come in while I'm working!
