My cat has been acting differently. I am a first time cat owner, so I am not sure if this is normal, a stage, or what.
She is 10 months old and I have had her since she was rescued at 5 weeks.
Lately, she has been destroying things like crazy, which she never did before. She also is spending more time in the spare bedroom when I am home. Usually she would sit on the back of the chair (or on my lap if I was trying to grade papers or something- in the way of course ). She rarely sleeps with me. She is withdrawn and destructive.
There have been no changes in my schedule, her food, her litter- nothing at all.
Has she been spayed? If not, it could be something going on hormonally..just a guess.
I would take her to the vet for a check up in any case. Good Luck!
She has been spayed. Back in January when she was 6 months. No changes in appetite, or bathroom habits.
She is not lethargic- she actually is more hyper.
Nothing has changed except she seems to be more independent (distant) and she is shredding toilet paper (I moved it from the spindle, to the window sill, she got that and now it has to go under the sink- which is a pain), attacking my clothes on hangers, the curtains, etc...

It sounds like she may be bored out of her mind. Do you have a cat-condo for her, toys of various kinds, a window she can look out? Do you leave her alone for long periods of time because of your job? Have you considered getting her a companion - another cat her age or younger?
This was taken several months ago. These two are devoted to each other. They never get bored and they're not destructive.
Try some catnip toys. Is there a stray cat outside she is seeing through the window? Spend some personal time at the same time each day and play with her.
Jayanrie, when a cat starts acting in a negative way outside of its normal behaviors, and begins to isolate itself as well, this could be a sign your cat is in pain, or ill. If I were you, I would examine your cat carefully to see if you can visually notice anything wrong (don't overlook her mouth and teeth). If the behavior doesn't change with some of the advice here, I would contemplate on taking her in to see a vet.
I'd make sure the cat wasn't ill, just like GOE of said.
and if the cat isn't ill she could be bored out of her mind. I had a cat that would love to shred TP. We had to hide new bales of TP when we would bring them into the house.
But here's an idea when you are gone for the day try turning on a radio to some music or talk radio and see if that keeps the cat calm.
That's a good idea. Also, it is true that cats are much better in plural.
My three love it when I leave music or the TV on to the weather station. My little Ami has gotten cheeky and figured out she can knock down the little weather radio, press the big button to turn it on and BAM! She gets an instant voice giving her the weather for the area.
Or she'll stand on the button! She maybe weighs 6 pounds on a full stomach!
