Motown great Jimmy Ruffin dies

By Brandon Griggs, CNN
updated 9:13 AM EST, Thu November 20, 2014

(CNN) -- Jimmy Ruffin, silky-voiced singer of the Motown classic "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted," died Monday in Las Vegas. He was 78.

The Mississippi-born Ruffin had a performing career that spanned 50 years, from the '60s heyday of Motown Records to the digital music era. He was an older brother of David Ruffin, a lead singer of the Temptations, who died in 1991.

His death was confirmed by his children, Philicia Ruffin and Jimmy Lee Ruffin Jr., in a statement Wednesday. The family did not offer a cause of death.

Rest in peace, Mr. Ruffin. Loved his version of "What Becomes Of A Broken Hearted".

Sad to hear of this man's passing. The power and depth reflected in this song alone, can touch the heart and soul of any human being. Just incredible the beauty of this music. Ruffin's music positively impacted millions, and his work lives on. I will always cherish his music and remember him as a great man.

May he rest in peace.

I saw Jimmy perform in 1970, in of all places, Oldham, Lancashire, England. He gave a great show, and I remember it very well. R.I.P Jimmy Ruffin, one of the Motown greats.
