I don't understand reality TV in any way (mtv, cd, life)

Almost every day I see an article about a reality star being arrested. I don't watch reality TV at all so don't know how many reality celebrities there are in this genre, but it seems anecdotally that the people who chose to participate have an abnormally high percentage of arrests and clashes with the law.
Do you think these reality celebrities behave in an outrageous and reckless behavior because they are on TV or are chosen to be on reality TV because they behave abnormally? Why do you think these people want to be on TV? Why do you watch them?
In 2001 I lived on the block where MTV Real World (Chicago) was being shot. There is very little 'reality' in those shows. Watching them walk up and down the streets with the boom mikes got old quickly, along with all the wannabees who stalked the area. Many area venues put up signs that they did not want "Reality" footage in their businesses.
I think that most reality TV shows can be produced very cheaply. No need for lavish sets, writers, etc.
Shows like "Mutt, The Bounty Hunter" and "Keeping Up With The Kartrashians" can't cost that much to make.
Note that both Mutt Dwayne Chapman and Kim Kartrashian and some of her family have been in the tabloids, and now we've got Brucelyn Jenner who's wormed his/her way into the frey of this genre of TV as well.
No wonder I don't watch much TV! I admit to reading about some of these people online, though. Have to keep up with their latest surgeries/hair transplants!
I agree there is a lot of coaching and influence behind the scenes from producers, directors etc. There is also a reality show for every situation it seems. Some are exploitation even. Like another poster said once the show ends the public usually begins to forget about the cast.
I'm old enough to remember the first reality TV show (though "reality TV" wasn't yet in the lexicon as it's used today): An American Family, which chronicled the life of the dysfunctional Loud family.
As bad as An American Family was, what we're seeing over 40 years later are celebrities, celebrities, and more celebrities...and freak shows.
