Pop music today just isn't what it used to be. Its not anywhere near the level it used to be at, back when Madonna was in her prime in the 80s. Now we've got pop stars such as Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus, bleck.

Of course not. Music changes about every decade. I'm mid age and they are too young for me, and I'm slowly losing interest in reading music news too.

And back in the 80's, there were mid-agers saying the same thing about the state of pop music. It's a cycle. Welcome to being the grumpy elders.

Pop starts today are "performers". They are not musicians or singers. I'd be surprised to learn that any of them studied music or took voice lessons.

Grande and Cyrus basically are doing burlesque shows, not singing. I'd like to know who writes their songs and who sings for them - those are the people who deserve the real credit.

Miley Cyrus is a serious musician. She sings better than most pop stars of the past 35 years. Also, she had a major role in writing every song from her last album and over her career has helped write most album tracks except for those on her debut.

However, I think Madonna's music was better than hers and that pop music has deteriorated.

Modern music is a shadow of the glorious past found from the 60's through the 80's. I don't know if the lead singer is male or female but this song, for example, is musical genius:

It may not be in my Top 20 list. Just saying it is musical genius. I was forced to play the piano as a kid. Got up to playing at the Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart level - barely. Perhaps that is why I appreciate the complexity and quality of some music. Pink Floyd comes to mind...

A wordsmith like Gordon Lightfoot is hard to find:
