Amen! Kirk Douglas was not only an acting legend and icon, he was also an activist and champion for civil rights, justice and fairness to all people. That makes him a real hero in my eyes.

Yes, and he ived a good and long life with a family to be proud of, for the most part. In my opinion, no one can ask for more than that.
My favorite films of his, btw, were Seven Days in May (excellent movie and acting) and Man from Snowy River.
MODS: There are now three threads about this. Would you combine them, please?

Perhaps. But very few of them live to 103 and have such an impact on the arts and bettering the world around them, donating millions to various charities. If you aren't interested or aren't impressed, you're free to move on to the next thread.
My favorite Kirk Douglas film is "Detective Story." It was released in 1951 and was directed by William Wyler. The supporting cast was top notch. It included Eleanor Parker, William Bendix, Cathy O'Donnell, Horace McMahon, and Lee Grant (her film debut).
This movie is another of the 'film noir' genre, which was popular in the years following World War II.
The film and its cast were nominated for about a half dozen Academy Awards.
Highly recommended.
