A sad day. Kirk DougIas was a movie giant, when he was one of many. He, in a simiIar styIe to his good friend Burt Iancaster, had an intensity that came right through the screen.
He aiso decided enough was enough of the HoIIywood bIack iist, and hired DaIton Trumbo to write the script for 'Spartacus.' Kirk was warned this wouId damage his career, but he went ahead with it, because he feIt it wasn't right, and it was time for this to end. This doesn't seem a very big deaI now 60 years Iater, but it sure was then.
He was a man who wanted to make quaIity fiIms, teIIing a good story, and he did so in much of his work.
He aIso gave miIIions away to charity, and was a man of good heart. RIP.
My favorite Kirk Douglas film is "Detective Story." ... Highly recommended.

I wholeheartedly agree with both of the choices above. I would like to mention another of his movies which is high on my list but not mentioned in the same discussion with other Douglas gems. That film is "Last Train From Gun Hill" and it showcases very intense and memorable performances by Kirk, Anthony Quinn, Carolyn Jones and Earl Holliman.
I can recommend another Kirk Douglas film which was released in 1951, as was "Detective Story."
This film is "Ace in the Hole." Kirk portrayed a down-on-his-luck reporter. The movie was a study in how the news is reported and the relationship between reporters, their newspapers, and the public. Also, the move cleverly showed how a gullible public can be manipulated by the press.
The genius behind this film was the great Billy Wilder, who was both producer and director.
I am pretty sure his life was not just a long one but an amazing one, too!
Growing up as a poor immigrant's son in America in the 1920s/30s, his life would probably make one heck of a movie!
He was wayyy before my time but I have seen Spartacus and a much more recent one called Wise Guys which was very entertaining. He was a movie legend, bar none.
R.I.P.
