Another huge name lost....these are just coming way too frequently lately.

Gosh, where do you start with a guy like Paul Sorvino....too many great roles to do justice to. I see that he was in A Touch of Class - and I saw that one in the theater in New York summer of '73, but I don't remember Sorvino's role in it. That was one of his early ones when he was still largely unknown to most. I'd like to see it again now nearly 50 years later and I'd look for him. What I remember most about that one is that George Segal was terrific in it.

The following year he did The Gambler with James Caan, and those were among my most favorite roles for both of them. Eerie to lose them both so close together, but then again they were very close in age.

The rest, as they say, is history. By the time The Firm rolled around in '93, he didn't have to say a word. Just the image of him sitting there with 2 or 3 other mobsters spoke volumes.

RIP, Paulie

"....he said that a goal of his later life was to “disabuse people of the notion that I’m a slow-moving, heavy-lidded thug.”

As with most who starred in “Goodfellas,” the image would follow him for the rest of his life, which he had complex feelings about.

’Most people think I’m either a gangster or a cop or something,” he said. “The reality is I’m a sculptor, a painter, a bestselling author, many, many things — a poet, an opera singer, but none of them is gangster.... It would be nice to have my legacy more than that of just tough guy.”

And I had no idea that Mira Sorvino was his daughter.

"My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed. My heart is rent asunder- a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’m sending you love in the stars Dad as you ascend."

He was great in Romeo & Juliet,, and Money Talks is a personal favorite.

Looking through his IMdb, there's a whole lot I haven't seen, but a beyond honorable mention to the 80s TV movie "Surviving",, Sorvino takes a father role in a story about teenage suicide. If you can handle the emotional content, it's a real gem. Starring Zach Galligan, Molly Ringwald, River Phoenix, Ellen Burstyn, etc..

I read a quote attributed to him the other day where he mentioned that if he had known at the time (I gather he didn't find out about the harassment and blacklisting of Mira until Weinstein was already in prison), that Weinstein would have ended up in a wheelchair.

She thanked her father in her acceptance speech for her 1995 Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Mighty Aphrodite):

MIRA SORVINO:
Oh my God! Thank you very much to all the members of the Academy. Thank you very much to Woody Allen for writing this beautiful character and for seeing fit to cast me in it and doing such a beautiful film. I want to thank my agents, Michelle Stern, Frank Frattaroli, and Steve Himber at William Morris, and also a very special thanks to Larry Taube. My manager Jean Fox, who I love very dearly. All of my friends who, you know who you are, and I love you very much, and my parents and my family.

And when you give me this award you honor my father Paul Sorvino, who has taught me everything I know about acting. I love you very much, Dad. I always looked at great performances and was so moved by how much other people's hearts made me feel as a child. And I wanted to be an actor who could move other people and make other people see something about the human spirit, and you've made me feel that I've made a small step towards that. So thank you very much, everybody. Thank you.
