She will be forever remembered best as Nurse Ratched.

Very sad. She's forever embedded in my brain as Grandmother from Flowers in the Attic. Outstanding actress.

^Yes! My sister had all the VC Andrews books and we loved this movie! The music still haunts me to this day.

I also loved her in "Invaders From Mars" (1986)

I remember reading that both of her parents were deaf, and her aunt taught her to speak!

R.I.P.

I saw both versions of "Invaders from Mars".

Rest In Peace, Louise.

We still refer to Nurse Ratched on a regular basis, as do many. Wow, she was spot-on in that role.

She was also Kai Winn on Star Trek: Deep Space 9. A wonderful actor, gone too soon.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest..... The part offered to several major names, including Anne Bancroft, Jane Fonda, and Angela Lansbury. They all turned it down, and a few of them even found her anti-feminist and misogynistic. Milos couldn’t find the right woman to take on the role until he saw Louise Fletcher in Thieves Like Us. Louise Fletcher was born on July 22, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama. Her parents, Reverend Robert Capers Fletcher and Estelle Fletcher, were both deaf.

She and her 2 sisters and 1 brother spent their first year and every following summer with their aunt so that she could teach them to speak.

Wow, that's interesting.

I knew she was in some of those productions. Some others I didn't. She must have been the go-to scary-older-woman character actress. On screen, she had a very strong "You will do what I say" aura.

She portrayed a very sadistic Nurse Ratched, more than the book. She made that role her own.
