Eric Carmen borrowed liberally from Rachmaninoff's Concerto for Piano nº2 in C minor for "All By Myself" believing the music was in public domain; it wasn't....
Very long story short Mr. Carmen to settle legal action had to pay royalties (IIRC) to Rachmaninoff's estate for not just above work but also "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again' where Eric Carmen also used Rachmaninoff's compositions.
He wrote what I consider to be a rock masterpiece.....
"Go All the Way" by The Raspberries......it has it all in just over 3 minutes....
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London in 1972 ....very fitting, as Eric Carmen
was huge fan of The Beatles and The Who....and you can hear the infuence of both.
One my fave songs to play on guitar.....that monster riff....and all those chord changes...
my god, so many chords....so many sections ....including a very nice electric 12 string section
with again tons of chords....I remember my best friend having the single
and we played the crap out of it....scratched it up like crazy.
The Raspberries were one of my favorites. I really appreciated Eric Carmen's classical training that resulted in complex chord sequences in his songs. I would have advised him that the Rachmaninoff's descendants renewed the copyright to his works and he would have avoided all that trouble (just like Puccini's descendants who sued ALW.) May his memory be a blessing to his family.
He transitioned from the 70's to 80's style music very well, but I think Never Fall In Love Again is probably the most iconic song, his signature song. Really like the softer sounds of the late 70's with groups like Air Supply, Bread....and David Gates Goodbye Girl, Leo Sayer More Than I Can Say. It was such a rich time for vastly different styles of music co existing together, the variety was unmatched in those days. The softer sound still holds up well.
I thought this 80's tune he did was very good. RIP Eric Carmen.
