He was awesome in the 1982 movie "An Officer and a Gentleman" for which he won an OSCAR for best supporting actor, the first Black actor to win that award.

He had playing the military officer pretty much down pat.
Really good in the original Iron Eagle.. And.. Even the second one.. The less said about the third and 4th movies.. While he might still have been the best part of them.. He couldn't carry those pieces of crap.
I very good movie with him in it that.. Not many people have seen.. Unless you had HBO in the mid 80's, where it was on every 20 minutes, it seemed.. Enemy Mine.
He's covered in prosthetics and makeup the entire movie.. But.. That really shows how well he could act.. That he gave a great performance behind all that makeup.

I know he won an Oscar for An Officer and a Gentleman, but I remember him best for his portrayal of Fiddler in Roots. RIP, sir.
Hey! I didn't know that was him playing Fiddler. I remember the scene between him and John Amos when Fiddler died. I was just a kid when I saw it but it stayed with me all these years. It was so sad...
