Honestly I don't know whether he's a good actor or not, his face gets in the way. On the one hand its sort of good looking but on the other its so in your face with all the strong features thats all you can see.
His sister I haven't seen in much but I don't think she's gorgeous or anything.
I'm not sure where there rep comes from honestly other than they are from an entertainment family and that unfortunately seems to go a long way,

I have always found him an excellent actor and to me he is actually pretty attractive. I also like Maggie his sister , also an excellent performer and I think she is quite cute and pretty in a non conventional sort of a way. Both are a great antidote to some of the identikit plastic Hollywood types .

I do wonder what a good actor like Jake is doing in "The Prince of Persia" though which looks just about as ghastly as it comes... Comes from a video game and looks just like one ... I have seen the previews a few times now at the movies and you could not pay me to see this. Mind you in comparison to SATC2 it looks like a creative work of utter genius !

The Gyllenhaal siblings seem like a talented pair to me and BWP I think Jake's godfather was Paul Newman and godmother Jamie Lee Curtis so not a bad start in life !

I love Maggie's eyes and her lips and her creamy white skin

she looked better(and thinner) in Crazy Heart than I have ever seen her. She likes to get naked a lot in movies. I find that not necessary.
Didn't help that the movie sucked though.

Good point Mooseketeer about Maggie being good looking in a non-identical Hollywood way, made me think.
I haven't actually seen her in much so I can comment on her acting.
I still think that Jake's strong features tend to distract or maybe mask is a better way of putting it, as in he may be an excellent actor but....maybe he would be a better stage candidate.
