I've been on the $45 Straight Talk Unlimited plan with my iphones for years. No problems at all but I'm looking at Consumer Cellular because I might be able to save more due to my low usage.
You can get a 250 minutes, 300 texts, 30MB data plan at Consumer Cellular for $17.50, you'd need to replace your phone though, but the monthly savings would cover that before long.
I agree that Consumer Cellular is great! Been with them for about 10 years now.
I didn't understand why you said the phone would have to be replaced though, because they allow you to bring in your own phone.
Perhaps I need to go back to the beginning of the thread.

You Will be able to save! Plus they are the most customer friendly provider around. They've had consistently high ratings in almost every aspect.
As I said earlier, I've been a very satisfied customer for 10+ years. Their service lines are purchased from AT&T, so you'd just need to know whether AT&T provides great coverage in your area.
Because you don't use the phone that much you don't seem to need an Unlimited Calling deal at all.

The person I replied to was on Verizon. You can't just bring any phone. Consumer Cellular uses AT&T's network which is GSM, Verizon is CDMA, phones are not compatible.
Cricket wireless $70/month for my wife's phone and my own phone unlimited domestic calling, text, photo messaging and internet (2.5 gb 4glte after that 3g)

I have a $30/month no-contract prepaid plan with T-Mobile. I found it nearly 4 years ago on their website, and I use it with an unlocked phone. A few times, I've changed phones and gone into a local T-Mo store for help with a new SIM card. Each time the store employee has been very helpful AND impressed with the deal I have.
When traveling I've been in some areas with poor T-Mo coverage. I've just bought a new Nexus 5X phone and am switching to Google's Project Fi. Starting with a $40/month plan, which is adjustable month to month depending on data usage.

This is what I am using- after comparing lots of options, I went with Cricket $35/mo (incl taxes/fees) - unlimited text/talk, 2.5GB data.
AT&T, 20GB Data with 3 iPhone 6s at $125. That includes the employee discount.
