Calculators are incredibly simple. Any half-decent EE student could probably design one from scratch without too much trouble.

A smartphone with a huge screen and a bunch of wireless radios and a multicore processor is a whole different level. Even if you could build a solar panel with 100% efficiency (you can't), you're going to have trouble powering the phone. You'd get ~7 watts assuming a 5x10cm panel on the phone.

Realistically you're going to get maybe a couple watts out when the thing is in direct sunlight in the middle of the day. Indoors you'll get something insignificant. You won't get enough to actually keep the thing charged without plugged it in.

A phone is basically a 2-way radio that is constantly transmitting and receiving. If you've ever owned walkie-talkies, you know that they use a lot of batteries.

If Moore's Law applies, 4.5 years.
The battery companies are working on it, the cell phone companies are working on it.
I don't think solar will work, but some thermal sources, like your body heat, and some air-battery technologies may work out.
Til then keep it plugged in at night.

Get a phone with wireless charging then you just plunk it down on a charging pad and it charges. No need to connect a wire to the phone.

I see Wi-Fi chargers advertised online. Apple too has a patent for a Wi-Fi charger. Still, the OP will still have to charge his phone, regardless

For those who hadn't heard, the WiFi charger will work in a location where there's a WiFi (duh).
It will generate power from the WiFi radio waves that are used.
Wouldn't it be great if this was a product designed and sold by Tesla??

NOT the *Tesla Company*, but the original person named Tesla did that, and as usual, most of his inventions are still being suppressed !
Oh well ...

They can put GPS collars on bears that last for 3 years. They have the tevhnology.
