It appears that many...most...new phones are not coming with "wall" chargers, only USB cables.
Does this apply only to iPhones?
From reading, it appears that plugging into a laptop may not provide enough power, if any at all.
I have an Android and want another one.
How do I know if my current charger(with block) will fit a new phone or are they pretty much universal?
Should I buy a charger at the same tine since the phone needs to be functioning in order to switch my number and currently saved minutes? (Tracfone, BTW? and a years worth of time/minutes on it)
I admit, even searching about this has left me a bit confused.
You can check your current charger and see what kind of connection it has (micro-usb or usb-c) and then see if that matches the port on the new phone.
Although my phone came with a charger, I prefer to charge my phone with a usb cable connected to my desktop. I also have a couple of usb chargers that I bought at Dollar Tree that work fine too (also had to buy cable that matched the phone's port (usb-c).
I have not plugged my phone into anything to charge for years, wireless charging is what I use, the charging dock of course is plugged in but never moves
I bought a Samsung S23 Ultra and it didn't have a charging block either. No issue, just buy one either online or at a local retail store, plenty of charging blocks available out there. I am not certain my prior S21 had a charging block either. Phone manufacturers are trying to cut production/equipment/accessory costs to help keep device pricing down any way they can. This has been going on for at least a couple of years now.
I would never buy cables or chargers at a Dollar Tree.
The biggest reason to avoid Dollar store cables is that they might be dangerous for your phone, because high-quality cables meet certain standards and have technology inside to help them manage the charge they're sending to your device.
You should buy quality cables and chargers.
And companies are not including them...to cut down on 'e-waste' supposedly. Which is BS. They still include the cable. Now, because they don't include the brick, I've got a drawer full of cables. I give someone a new phone and they're all "This cable is different"...right, but your old one still works. Oh! So they don't want the new cables.
This is where we are at now.
My understanding is that a cable is a cable. It cannot hurt a phone. You might have different functionality with different cables as some allow data transfer and others do not.
However, using a charger that is too powerful could potentially hurt a phone, with a charge that is too strong and generating a lot of heat that breaks down the battery faster. Chargers from Dollar Tree are low powered (mine says 5V = 1A). I have not had a problem with them. I tend to use the lowest, slowest way to charge my phone, which is by connecting it to my desktop (with a Dollar Tree cable).
That's not remotely true Noodlecat. Today's phones are designed to draw only the power they need. You could use a 200 watt charger but if the phone only draws 5 watts, that's all it is going to draw.
