Don't Count on a Verizon IPhone in 2009 - PC World

As you know, my IPOD was taken out of my office. I was debating on getting another IPOD, settling with my satellite radio/online listening or waiting on an IPHONE.

The IPHONE won't be out for Verizon until 2010. Oh, well.

I just ordered another IPOD today (120 GB Classic).

That would be interesting though since Verizon uses a different technology. Apple would need to design new iphones that run on CDMA network.

If/when this happens, how would IPHONE work with Verizon Wireless?

Supposedly, Verizon is going to start changing to an LTE network in 2010, but this would still require a chip that the iPhone doesn't have. Maybe the next model would be compatible.

Yeah...what this guy said. Very soon At&t and VZW (and I think T-mobile) will be going to LTE as their 4G celluar protocol. Next gen iPhones should support this network by default since it is what At&t will be using. I could very well see the iphone traveling over to VZW when this happens. CDMA is on the way out.

They won't get it in 2010 either. AT&T will do whatever they have to do to extend their exclusive with Apple. The Iphone is too lucrative for them to give that up.

It's not AT&T's choice. Apple is losing market share to RIM because the iphone is only available on one carrier, while the blackberry is available on all 4 of the largest carriers in NA. The latest figures released show RIM is ahead of Apple in smartphone sales.

Apple definitely wants to work out a deal with verizon since they are the number 1 carrier in the US. But they won't build one based on CDMA technology so verizon will need to roll-out their LTE technology across all the major markets first. We'll see if that happens in 2010.
