Smart jack is a term applied to the HDSL remote unit. It also known as an HRU (HDSL Remote Unit) usually made by Adtran or Pairgain.

I've had MJ for seven months now, and it has more than paid for itself. Living in a rural area with hills and trees, I get poor reception on my cell phone(s)(tried several), I needed something more dependable, to be able to call out when needed. There are some little quirks once in a while, but if anything too bad, just hang up, and call again. Forty dollars is your purchase price, and that includes your first year of service. Have called several different states with no problem, have been cut off a couple of times, but no biggie. I think the out of country calls are 5 cents a min. You must have cable internet, and the computer has to be on. There is voice mail in it too, although it takes a while to get to the in box. You can transfer a phone number for a small price if I remember right. Renewing the service after the first year is 19.95 a year, or 59.95 for 5 years.
Some people rag on MJ but, at that price it works good for me.
