I bought a bag of HT's raw peanuts last spring to boil. I had left-overs, shelled them and just stuck the raw peanuts in my veggie garden a foot or so apart. Last week I pulled all the plants up and harvested a pile of raw peanuts of all different sizes attached to the roots.. some big/mature, others smaller.
The plants grow about a foot or more high, then the limbs "peg" down into the soil around the mother plant and the peanuts are found growing underground in the rooted pegs. You won't see them until you pull the plant up in late summer/fall as I did last week.
This would be the most economical way to get green peanuts in bulk very cheaply. Google it. They are very easy to grow, but need some room to sprawl. And I would think the richer your garden dirt is, the bigger the peanuts and harvest would be.
Like everything else it will be "seasonal".. coming in all at once. You may be able to figure out a way to stagger the plantings and pull the earlier spring plantings sooner. And possibly figure out a way to dry and store them. Then use some of last year's seed peanuts to start a new crop the next spring.
2 people here listed farms and farmer markets on Johns island to get your peanuts. Those are good places to go. Don't go to Whole Foods, which is a overpriced rip off, or any grocery store.
I'm trying to get in touch with the lady on the St Johns island that sells boiled peanuts from a big red cart. Anyone know her? I bought peanuts last week from her then came home to Columbia and saw her on the Anthony Bourdain show. I wonder if she knows she was on national TV.
