Charleston ! Charleston !... is a great compendium of the history of the city and its surrounding areas.... the good, the bad and the ugly.... Its usually available in most independent bookstores ..I know Blue Bicycle on upper King has it.
I usually gift a copy to people I know who are moving to the area.
And for the architecture / real estate/ history fanatics... Jonathan Poston's... The Buildings of Charleston.. a massive tome covering every antebellum house located in the historic district... house by house .. street by street... who built it .. who has owned it .. an external and internal description .. usually with a pic...published in 1997 for the Historic Charleston Foundation... by the Clemson University Press
Encyclopedia of Civil War Shipwrecks by W. Craig Gaines
Hidden History of Old Charleston by Margaret Middleton
Hidden History of the Civil War by Margaret Middleton
Six Miles To Charleston, The true story of John and Lavinia Fisher by Bruce Orr
I have a few including the above mentioned Charleston! Charleston! by Walter Fraser Jr which is very good. I also have:
A Brief History of James Island by Douglas Bostick
Folly Beach A brief History by Gretchen Stringer-Robinson Explorations In Charleston's Jewish History by Solomon Breibart Sea Island Yankee by Clyde Bresee
and a few pictorial history books: The Folly Beach Book Charleston An Album From The Collection Of The Charleston Museum
Charleston Alone Among The Cities (from the Historical Society)
And even a copy of Ashley Cooper's Doing The Charleston by Frank Gilbreth Jr. Gilbreth was a columnist with the Post and Courier for at least 40 years writing under the pen name Ashley Cooper.
I also have something called The Rise Of Charleston; Conversations With Visionaries, Luminaries And Emissaries Of The Holy City which I haven't opened yet. Some of these are better than others but they're all interesting!
Thanks for all the great suggestions! I enjoy reading about history and architecture especially, but do any of you know of a "true crime" series or have recommendations for book about the paranormal/ghost stories of Charleston?
