OP, if you are flying into Ohare and never have before, note that there are times (depending on airline and plane of course) where you unload outside. Nothing like a winter eye-opener, when you travel from the south in clothing based on warmer temps, to step out on the stairs in blowing snow and artic wind chills (oh, and waiting for your bag if they had to put under the plane).

So stuffing some form of a coat and hat in a carry-on isnt a bad idea unless you know you'll de-plane inside.

The way to beat cold weather is to dress in layers. Several light layers will keep you warmer then one heavy layer. Also be sure to keep feet, hands, and head warm.

As an example I used to wear silk long underwear, then a t-shirt, then a dress shirt, then maybe a sweater vest, then a suit coat/sports jacket, then a top coat. I wore suits and dress shoes so I would wear two pairs of socks plus totes pull over the shoes rubber boots. Took the boots off when in the office.

Another good idea is wear a scarf so it can be wrapped around head and face if out side for long.

My wife wore those UGG boots with long wool socks and carried her dress shoes in a bag then changed in her office.
LandsEnd also. Their regular free shipping only takes a couple of days, and you get a lot of bang for your buck.

That is horrible

Eddie Bauer might be another good place to check for coats... I know there's an outlet but not sure if there's a regular store

Thanks to all for advice.

SOme findings: Burlington Coat Factory had nothing
I called Gander, and the woman there made it sound like they didn't have much of a stock in terms of serious winter coats.
Sports Authortity and Half Moon both had limited stock, not much in the winter category, really lighter stuff for here.
Dicks--nada.

I ended up just layering: sweater, fleece, light coat and was fine.

bluntstones ended up being a good choice--maybe not the warmest, but at least something that is useful here

i'll order something ahead next time! it was an unexpected weekend trip so i didn't have any leave time. and since it was just a weekend, i was also iffy about throwing down real money for a down jacket or whatever.

i appreciated the suggestions, just the same.

.
guess that can make sense for SC; i wasnt sure if chains like those we listed would carry similar stock (somewhat anyhow) regardless of region as up here 'my' Gander still has a solid supply. But winter will be here for awhile lol.

Glad it still worked out, if you find yourself looking at other trips to the north in the winter season, note most chains do have decent return policies on apparel if you do need to order online due to your location.

our 6 yrs in SC with all family back in WI, only our daughter/son in law came down to visit a couple times (before our grandson was born). All others? "Nah we dont like heat/humidity/travel/blah blah blah" lol

so it was us making the trips back home to see them all, including every Dec so we got to enjoy heavy snow and extreme cold--the reasons we left WI in the first place. Needless to say we never got rid of our winter clothing, and now being back up here it is a good thing we kept it all. I will say we never wore our winter coats in SC though.
