Census report: Asian population the fastest-growing racial group in Charleston area - Post and Courier

"The group may be small — it makes up 2 percent of the state’s population, and slightly more locally — but it has more than doubled in the past 15 years. Since 2010, the Asian population in South Carolina has grown by a quarter, and a significant amount of that growth has been in the tri-county area.

The Asian grouping in the census captures a diverse group of citizens who trace their ancestry to countries that include Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand and Vietnam."

I guess statistically it makes sense. If there were 10 Asians 15 years ago, and now there are 20, the population increased two-fold!!!

Anyways, the population is probably booming because of Boeing, MUSC, and Bosch. Volvo will bring in more as well. I've seen quite a few SE Asians working the line as I walk the production floor or in IT. I hope this facilitates the opening of more authentic Asian restaurants. Glad to see a bit more diversity introduced to this great city.

I hope some Asian City Data readers weigh in on these comments. A tongue-in-cheek racist comment is still racist.
I'm a South Carolinian who married into a Chinese family. My children are Asian. So I'm thrilled to hear the Asian community is growing. We need diversity. It's so much more difficult to keep prejudice alive and perpetuate stereotypes when you actually know someone from a different race/ethnicity/religion/orientation.
And, interestingly enough, there was a Chinese community in Charleston as early as the 1870s.

You're absolutely right, we need diversity. I'm hoping the increase in knowledge economy means more diversity.

Well, I did make a post asking if he really meant was his post implied, and my post was deleted as trolling, while his post remains. Call me surprised.

Agreed. Also funny considering how binary race is viewed in the lowcountry. "Embracing" diversity and inclusiveness goes beyond AfAmBlack/White. But I get it, Asian = Chinese food = hanging cats. Stellar!

Proof is in the pudding when a real conversation can't even get started on this thread. Anyways, in my opinion the influx of Asians will stay very low. Outside of Texas and the northern "South", and unless it's to Atlanta or Research Triangle, most Asians tend to veer away from the deep south. Hopefully Charleston can escape that trend, but I highly doubt it.
