My husband and I are thinking about possibly moving to the Charleston, SC area for retirement. I have just begun looking at realestate on Johns Island, James Island, and Mt. Pleasant. We would like to meet other retirees, and I thought one of the new developments on Johns or James Islands would be helpful. We do not golf, but would be open to purchasing in a golf community. We enjoy eating out and the feel of a downtown area, but if we are close enough to Charleston, that might not be mandatory. Any input would be most helpful!
There are a lot of options in the areas you mentioned. Depending on budget and just what you're looking for in the way of a house one area might be better than another. They all have their pros and cons.
Traffic out to John's Island is getting horrendous, and there is no end in sight to the new residential development out that way.Old Mount Pleasant could be ideal, but housing is bumping up against $600 dollars a square foot.I think I'd strongly consider the Avondale area of west Ashley.
I think more info might be needed from you to get a feel what exactly what you enjoy, what you need, what you don't - in order to help you narrow things down =)
This area has so much to offer that just being 20 mins away in one direction or another - might make a big difference.

Generally when one is retired they can make their own schedule so rarely is commuting time an issue for them as in they can stay away from typical rush hours.

It's All-day-long traffic getting on and off John's Island!!! Especially Fridays and Saturdays when all the Kiawah traffic mess gets going. In fact most of the Charleston area has heavy traffic all week. SC has a horrible problem funding new road improvement projects.
