I have friend coming to town in early May. He wants to stay at the Tides Hotel on the beach. His taste leans more to the Steak and Seafood side than the BBQ. I'd like to get some recommendations for the various Establishments on Folly.

Are there any "must try" places on the Island ??

Where does BLU rank on the Scale ??

Do they celebrate Cinco de Mayo all week ??

Any good Pickup Bars (he's available) ??

Rita's is pretty good.

Never went to Blu. Heard to many negatives about food quality and service.

Bar type dives is about all FB has.

Lots of positive reviews of Jack Of Cups, but a strange limited menu.

Definitely no haute cuisine on Folly. Blu is mediocre at best.
Most of the restaurants are decent, but it's all beach fare...laid back, open air, music playing, dog friendly.
I like Chico Feo, Taco Boy, Lost Dog, Jack of Cups and Crab Shack. As long as your expectations aren't too high, they're all good.

Its funny, for years we have been told that the Crab Shack really stunk. We would go for what ever reason, with very low expectations and left pretty happy.

My favorite story about the Crab Shack is when I was there with a 14 yo daughter who casually ordered a "strawberry daquari" and got the real thing! We still laugh about that.

Truth be told -- that would fit my buddy's current lifestyle perfectly !! He may not want to leave.

I think the subject of "Steak" will come up during his visit. Can you get a decent Rib Steak anywhere on the Island ??

mckee --
Is the Folly Crab Shack part of the group with Shacks in West Ashley and on Dorch Road ??

If he wants to leave the beach for finer dining (maybe he picks up a hot date he wants to impress ), have him try Mondos, Sermets or La Tabella on James Island.

The other two Shacks were hit and miss....West Ashley was OK, but Dorch Road did not impress.
I'll keep those higher-end places in mind.

Is Bowern's Island and option on weekends ??

As far as the Steak goes, I may just Grill in my Back yard.
