Hello!
My husband is currently interviewing for a position in Charleston and we are considering a move to the area (we are currently in Wisconsin). I'm looking for some "insider information" on the area to see if it would be a good fit for us.
We have a 7 yr old daughter that I homeschool. We are secular homeschoolers, and quite honestly don't fit in with the WI homeschool families as most of them are religious hs'ers. I'm wondering if there are secular groups in the Charleston area that are welcoming?
In the 4.5 yrs we have lived in WI, I can honestly say people are not welcoming at all. Since everyone has lived here their entire life, they aren't as willing to get to know "outsiders" since they have their entire families in the same city and don't really feel a need to extend their networks. Is that the case in the Charleston area? We would really like to get to know some friends, especially for my daughter's sake. This is really my biggest concern. As a side note, we are not religious people who go to church and that has been a big issue here in WI.
What areas are good to live in? We'd ideally like to find a house with around 2000 sqft on at least a 1/4 acre for around $200k. Is this even possible? My husband would like no more than 40 min to commute and the position is on Daniel Island.
What is medical care like? I have a rather rare health condition and need to find a GREAT gastro & allergist.
Any other information is very much appreciated. Charleston seems like a nice city I really hope to learn more about it and its family-friendliness.
We have excellent medical care here with MUSC (medical university of SC) and other hospitals I am sure that there would be a specialist for your needs. Since school districts aren't a issue I think finding a home won't be a problem either. Check your DM for some options.
Someone was just telling me about a Centex community on Clements Ferry Road. They are over 2000 sf for low $200's which is really cheap for the area. It's right down the road from Daniel Island. Good luck! Charleston is amazing!
Centex does have a new townhome community going up right now called Cain Crossing. They are very nice townhomes. There are also affordable homes in The Penninsula but these two neighborhoods won't have .25 acres of yard.
Keep in mind that The Penninsula is zoned for Cainhoy Elementary and Cainhoy Middle school. They scored "below average" and "unsatisfactory" on the State Report Cards. If you are home schooling that may not be a problem.
the people here are extremely friendly. i think it's a southern thing.
the medical care is excellent. MUSC is a great hospital with very up-to-date everything.
i rather like living in West Ashley, but it's a matter of personal preference. there are a wide variety of places to live here.
