My husband and I are considering moving to Summerville, but looking at the data on this website, I saw 193 registered sex offenders. That really scares me. Where I live now, there are 10. I did some random searching on various places I've lived NJ, PA, AR, CA, etc and all of them are between 10-25 registered sex offenders, so 193 seems very high.

Not sure what to think- Summerville seems beautiful, like the ideal place to live and I am so excited to move there, but we just had a baby girl and now I'm nervous.

Can anyone ease my mind or give insight to why this # is so high?

Thank you.

Yes, in every subdivision I have looked at moving into therre seems to be atleast one sex offender. However, these people are often not the cream of society and where they live and their housing often will reflect this.

Another thing you should beware of when looking at these kind of statistics is that not all sex offenders are created equally. If you are intoxicated and caught peeing behind a building you will end up on this list. If you mooned someone you could also end up there. I have seen people on there for things they did in the early 1960's that pose no further threat. What you have to do is figure out who lives close by and look up what the offense was that was actually committed and the time frame involved.

I agree with one part of what the previous poster said: the fact that a lot of what puts people on sex offender lists are actually low level crimes and some were misdemeanors a few years ago. For instance, the age of consent in North Carolina was 13 until 1995 I think! And a lot of Lationo immigrants on the sex offender registry had sex with, say a 15 yr old when they were, say 18 or 19...perfectly legal and acceptable in most Latin American countries! Possesion of child porn will put you on the list also. Possesion, nothing else! I think you'll find that VERY, VERY few sex offenders kidnapped and had sex with little children which is what seems to be your fear.

The numbers for sex offenders posted on this site may not be perfect either; for instance, it shows the city of Winston-Salem (pop:186K) as not having any at all!

Roncorey1 said, "Possession of child porn will put you on the list also. Possesion, nothing else! I think you'll find that VERY, VERY few sex offenders kidnapped and had sex with little children which is what seems to be your fear. "

Possession of child porn should put someone on the sex offender list. Playboy Magazine is one thing, but child porn is very sick and twisted...anyone who looks at and/or owns that type of thing should be considered dangerous and a threat to children.

I agree with the other statements made by previous posters...some people who are on that list should not be - such as someone who urinated behind a building or tree and got caught by the police - or an 18-year-old young man has consensual sex with a 17-year-old girl then she yells, "rape" because she gets caught by her parents or thinks she's pregnant. So, those lists may be exaggerated with names of people who pose no threat to society.
www.watchdog.com lists the offense, the year it happened, the age of the victim, the offender's address, etc. If you haven't used this site, it is very helpful and puts the crimes into more perspective.

We lived in Ladson/Summerville for a year in Summerhaven. We had tons of sex offenders in the general area and one moved into the subdivision next to ours (within walking distance) in Summer Park. It didn't bother me until he started to come through the woods to my subdivision to hang out with his friends.

Thanks, I'm sure there must be a good explanation-- it seems strange. I think when we visit I am going to ask the local police station about it and the realtors, also the few people I know there.

It makes sense all of the reasons everyone above listed and when I checked out the watchdog website, very few of the 193 were child related, most were other issues.
