I am visiting charleston for a week this month, on business and am not familiar with the area. I plan to play alot of golf. What are the odds of an encounter or siting of an alligator or snake? and how do you handle things. Thanks I may be over reacting but I want to be safe.

Oh dear! It's a little more likely than a earthquake happening while your here. J/k

Honestly your gonna be okay. If you see one take a photo and post it! I have seen gators in Rivertowne and Park West they are here, but they aren't running around everywhere. Snakes I have seen a few. One in my backyard and one at Palmetto Park.

Yuck to both!

If you play well enough and stay away from the water hazards you chances are slim to none.....

Depends on where you are playing?
Legend Oaks > Really GOOD chance
Crowfield > Really GOOD chance
Kiawah > Better than normal chance

A golf ball costs on the average of $2.10 > An arm or leg will run slightly higher ... And if you have to take a stroke penalty to get a safe drop, by ALL means, do so

The snakes "should" still be sleeping ... "should" ... Its been a colder than usual winter so hopefully they'll remain hibernated a little longer

Golf courses will remove any gator large enough to make a go for a golfer. With that said, they can walk miles overland at night so its possible....but you are more likely to be run over in the parking lot.

Snakes will definitely be there too.

Simple answer....lead with your club....just probe the grass etc. with your arm extended out and you will be just fine.

LOL, I actually have used an old beat up 5-iron on nature walks when flipping over rocks. Found a young cottonmouth that way once and saved myself a finger in the process.

The gators are just getting more mobile, the weather has to get warmer before you really start to see them alot....

We saw two last week out at Magnolia plantation, one about 9' the other closer to 14'........

Wow, those are some good sizes OTC!
You definitely have a good chance of seeing one, but its usually from a distance and they "usually" steer clear of us.

Yeah, one was completely out of the water sunning himself (that was the larger one) the other was mostly underwater, only his head sticking out and the rule of thumb on that is the distance from eyes to nose is the legnth of the gator in feet and the rough guess was that he was about nine feet.

Wow, I've lived here for three years and have never seen a snake (thank GOD!) or a poisonous spider and the only time I saw any gators was on the Weapons Station/Army Battalion area.
