Looks like the WVSSAC "Super Six" will be moving to Laidley Field. Charleston out bid Wheeling to host the state championship games for all three classes. I feel bad for Wheeling because that's been a staple for such a long time there. It will probably have a noticeable impact.

^ *Edit to the above. Next season will be the first year of 4 classes in High School Football. Therefore, the "Super Six" title is dead.

To me it was a good move. Makes it more centrally located for more people. Laidley Field is very easy to get to, and is a nice facility.

I agree. Laidley Field makes a lot of sense. With 4 classes, that will require hotel rooms for 2 additional schools and their fans. That alone might have been a decider. Wheeling has some hotels, but the KV simply has way more.

I'd have to guess that many staying in Wheeling would also be staying in hotels in Ohio.

30 years ago when the "Super Six" was awarded to Wheeling, there were not many hotels and some fans did have to stay in OH. However, there are plenty of rooms in Wheeling now and if you stay in OH, that is a personal choice and not because that is the only place you can find a room.

It remains to be seen if Laidley is "a nice place" but we have three years (and maybe four as there is an option year). I have seen many negative comments on the current condition of the facility. Most were related to the lack of cleanliness. Other negatives thrown out are parking issues and the surrounding neighborhood not being very good.

Personally, I have a hard time understanding the switch but time will tell.

An event was held Friday, February 23. 2024. A candlelight vigil was held to say goodbye to the former Hooters location in Kanawha City. The restaurant, along with the former Captain D's next door is being torn down to clear the land for construction of a new Sheetz location.

The candlelight vigil, quirky news that it is, was picked up by news media around the world. I saw it on the London Daily Mail site. It sems like an odd thing to be famous for, at least it's not bad news.

Budget Tapes and Records in Kanawha City is closing Sunday. Somebody decided to retire, although the reports did not say if the owners or the manager decided to retire.

A candlelight vigil to remember Budget is being held on Monday, March 4, from 7-10PM.

Charleston will host the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships in May. The event is 6 days, and will be a unique opportunity for the city to draw in visitors.
