I just got back from the WV State Capitol where they were hosting the Viking Press today in ESPN's Met-Rx World's Strongest Man Competition.
Charleston native Phil Phister's heat didn't have to participate today. But i saw 12 other competators. Magnus Samuelson pressed this log over his head 15 times. He's one of the more notable people in this event.
This event will showcase Charleston, WV several times on ESPN starting in December when it first airs to the public. There was a good crowd on hand for the events in front of the golden dome. If you get a chance to go down there this week and weekend try to do so.
On Sunday, they will be at the Chuck Yeager airport for events starting at 11am. Then the finals will move to Appalachian Power Park that evening.
Those guys are unreal. The Strongman competitions are big overseas, I watched them whenever I could. I always wondered why an NFL team didnt hire 4 or 5 of them for a defensive line!
Good point about football. I think with some of these fellas though, they are really really strong and good at what they do, but i think they have trouble moving. I noticed several of them walking with a slight limp today, probably from the constant abuse of the knees.
I took some pics on my Blackberry, i'll try to get some of them on here soon.
I dare one of you to walk up to that group and fake a foreign accent and go, "You! You are girly boys!" and then run away as fast as you can. Don't worry - they can snap you like a twig but I bet they can't run fast.
Someone needs to video you doing it and I might pay $5 for the laugh.
This is the kind of things that helps a city image. Excellent Charleston needed this , thanks Phil and Mr. Jones. I live in Louisville , Ky now and this is kind of thing that build pride in the community, they have the Kentucky Derby where they party for month , and we are getting ready to host the Ryder Cup , people get excited and come together when your community is spotlighted for events like this. Phil or Danny for governor 2012 if they can pull this off , then maybe they can get some jobs with it to valley .
I was at the Marriott today, and saw some of the participants packing up to go home. I guess they were the ones who didn't make the finals.
I should've asked them why they sucked so bad and ran out the door, hehe.
