Charlotte is one of the areas I'm considering for relocation, but haven't had the chance to visit. Someone told me there is s stench in the air in Charlotte due to nearby papermills or factories. Is this true ?

I think your source is misinformed, industrial smell is absolutely not an issue in Charlotte.

This air is cleaner then what I grew up on. My son had bad respiratory (spelling?) issues when we lived in NJ....since we've lived here, it has cleared up...he doesnt even need to take his treatments

There are a couple places where the word stench is appropriate at certain times during the day/year. But no more than every city I've been to, and far less than most.

There are also places that smell like doughnuts or those sugared nuts you get at ball games. And off 77 near Harris Blvd it smells like flowers on the highway.

Yum.

I have only heard complaints about a compost farm and the occasional problem at a sewage treatment plant. There was a recent sewer problem in Davidson. Nothing widespread and certainly not factories or pulp/paper.

Only place I ever noticed a pulp stench in the air was Deep Creek Lake in MD, but that was many years ago.

It also smells like potato chips around the Lance Factory. Far from smelly.

It can be really stinky in Ballantyne where I work on some mornings. Definitely sewage-y. Someone told me it was some kind of facility in Pineville.

That "someone" may have confused Charlotte with Charleston (SC.) Charlotte is not generally stinky.

There is a "south Charlotte smell" that I've always attributed to the swampy area near McMullen Creek Greenway. It's only present a couple of times a year that I've noticed in the 6 years of living here. Usually it's on a very still-air day, just the right temperature, etc. Several factors seem to have to converge for it to present itself.

On days that I notice it, it seems to disappear quickly. It's not nearly as awful as paper mills or factories. It's just bad enough that my husband and I will comment, "Ahh there's that south Charlotte smell" and then later on it's gone.
