My child is entering CMS for Kindergarten in the 2011-2012 school year and didn't get selected for a magnet school in the first lottery. It says I have the option of requesting a reassignment, but the website says there needs to be a hardship (if it's not our home school and I'm not a CMS employee). The school I would like for my child to be reassigned to is actually closer to our house than our home school. Our home school is 3.23 miles from our house and has a greatschools rating of 3, and the school I would like for her to be reassigned is 2.7 miles from my house and has a greatschool rating of 9. Our house is mere steps away from the zoning border that would switch the home school assignment. Is there anything I can/should do to increase my chances of having a reassignment request approved?

There is very little chance you will be able to get reassigned. What school are you trying to get into? Some school (good and bad) are so over-crowded there just isn't anyway to fit extra kids in. Best of luck to you though.

For most popular magnets (montessori, language, traditional) you will not get in via re-assignment, I am sorry to say. Go ahead and try, but be prepared for it not to go through.

The school I want to be reassigned to is Clear Creek. It's not a magnet school. I figured that since she wasn't selected to attend any of my choice magnet schools there wouldn't be a chance to reassign to one. Clear Creek, to my knowledge, is a regular elementary, just one of the better ones. Our home school is J H Gunn. My neighbor is not pleased with the level of education her son is getting there.
