Why does the North refer to this word as Appa-lay-shin and people in Charlotte refer to it as Appa-latch-in? Which is the correct way to say the word?

Both ways. The Appalachians are in the North, too. The Northern pronunciation is Appa lay shin.

Yes I meant to say Appa lay shin. I traveled up north a few times and it seems that the WV/Ohio state line is where people start pronouncing it appa lay shin.

People that live in the next city south of Charlotte call it MUNroe, while those of us that just drive through it to get to the beach call it monROE.
