I work in a call center job and take over 1000 calls per month.

The place I work has a new policy on sales offer rates where if you are under 50% it results in corrective action, and after three consecutive months termination. No matter what the customer is calling in about, even if they are cursing and screaming, I have to offer them a new product. The kicker is out of over 1000 calls they only listen to 10 calls and determine the offer rate based on that. So if I offer on 95% of my calls but they happen to listen to calls that are part of that 5% where I didn't offer, I get corrective action. I always meet my sales goals and have always been reliable in attendance. I've not met my offer rate requirement two months in a row, so next month there's a very good chance I will be terminated.

In NC, would I qualify to receive unemployment benefits under this scenario?

you would most likely be eligible. As long as you didn't quit or weren't fired for doing something illegal, the standard is as long as you were thrown out of work "through no fault of your own."

You can estimate your benefits using this site:

This post is best for the North Carolina forum. There are several people there that monitor for NCESC issues that do not monitor here. So, you may wish to repost if your post doesn't get moved.

The answer already given is correct though but if you have follow-up you might want to do it in the NC forum.

Hate to hear that man. These companies really suck and they know it. I'd think you would get unemployment, but it wouldn't surprise me if your employer tried to fight it; I've seen alot of that as of late. Being that you have call center experience, you might try going into a dispatcher position (911, Fed Ex, UPS, U-Haul, or pretty much any trucking company in the area). Starting pay is usually in the low to mid 30s (and can go as high as the mid 40s with experience); all of this depends on the company though. College education is a plus, but it is not required in many cases. Hope this helps.

I am sorry to read of your situation.

I do not understand why companies behave like this. The biggest problem I had when employing people was finding and keeping good people. I/we used incentive systems to encourage better performance.

It is hard for an employer to fairly monitor total performance based on a stated maximum of 1% ( 10 in 1000) sample rate. Whilst I can understand an employer wishing to motivate employees, it is hardly an enlightened policy to "encourage" an entire department by firing several colleagues.

If you are able to find a different job then I would try to do so as I feel that you are not in a good place.

bchris02, That really stinks. The only thing you can do is prepare for the worst. Get all your paperwork in order (ie birth certificates/utility bills/ss cards/etc) so if it does happen, you can start working on the next step to support your family.

When you have a plan and things need to get done it really helps you psychologically get through it! Telling you that through experience!

Agreed, the policy is very unfair. Several top-performing employees have already been terminated over the offer rate. Basically, my job has been hell-on-earth since this started. Everybody is worried about their job because when it comes down to it, the offer rate is pretty much based on luck given the low number of calls sampled.

Thanks for recommending places such as 911, Fed Ex, UPS, U-Haul, etc. I need to find a new job ASAP. I have a bachelors degree in IT but have been out of the field over 2 years and never was able to really get my foot in the due to the poor economy combined with some personal misfortunes. I am considering going back to school as another option. Being that I already have my bachelors degree, would it be possible to get government grants/loans for additional schooling i.e. a masters program at UNCC?

OP, do you work at Sprint? Sounds like something I've heard before.

Its not Sprint but a very similar company. Our department head who has instated this policy actually came from Sprint, so that's probably where he got the idea.

That sounds like someone wants a high turnover rate. I guess it would work to keep salary costs low. That's the only thing I can think of. Anything less than 10% is a joke. Especially if all it takes is bad luck with the monitors drawing the few calls where you didn't offer a new product.
