There are bus routes specifically for getting to light rail from SouthPark, and lots of folks use those. I doubt the people who are actually using it would describe it as useless.

You can look in Collins Park off Scaleybark Road. This area is transitioning. It's not the greatest but it has been gentrifying with nowhere to go but up (in my opinion). The houses are generally small. Since they made the north side of Scaleypark part of the Myers Park HS zone, prices have gone up but you can still find an un-updated house for 160K. You can also look in Madison Park between Tyvola and Woodlawn, but prices are a bit higher there.

I like the idea of taking the light rail to work in the city.
Just a few things...the light rail is only 11 miles long, so it doesn't cover a huge part of the city at all.

Most of what is around the light rail is retail, condo's and apts.

The light rail can be a convenient way for some folks to get to work uptown without having to pay uptown parking, but most people who use it still have to drive to a station and park to get on it.

Charlotte's buses are actually quicker ways to get to uptown than the light rail in most cases.

I would suggest you enlist the help of a realtor for info on homes in your price range that are on a bus line.

This way you still get to work on mass transit but a lot easier than trying to ride the light rail.

The reality is, most homes within walking distance of the light rail will be well over your price range, with the exception of the more challenged neighborhoods I don't think you'd want to live in anyway.

Why not ride the train a few times at different times and days to see first hand the areas
you want to avoid? Here are some videos that are posted of the rides
