I thought the banking collapse had stunted Charlotte's growth, so this article today surprised me:

10 fastest growing U.S. cities - Charlotte, N.C. (1) - CNNMoney

And by the way, what does that 1,249,449 population figure represent? According to Wiki, the 2010 Charlotte city population was 731,424; the 2010 Mecklenburg County population was 919,628; the 2010 metro population was 1,758,038; and the 2010 combined statistical area population was 2,402,623.

The 1.2 mil number is the Urban Area population, in which there was an entire thread in here recently that discussed the new numbers from the census.

Thanks. This is very confusing, though. So those nine "urban area" counties are where the 1,249,449 figure in CNN Money comes from? According to Wikipedia, these five counties make up the metropolitan area (MSA) with a population of 1,758,038:
• Anson
• Cabarrus
• Gaston
• Mecklenburg
• Union
• York

It seems odd that these five "metropolitan area" counties would have more people than the nine "urban area" counties.

I guess I need to track down that thread. I'm too confused.

The growth from 2000-2007 was pretty dramatic. It's leveled off since then, but those figures I believe are from 2000-2010.

The urbanized area is determined by consistent population density over a certain threshold or the true built up area. So Charlotte's UA only consists of portions of those counties and not the entire populations thereof, and the larger satellite cities have their own urbanized areas. For instance, in York County, only Fort Mill and Lake Wylie are included in the urbanized area; Rock Hill is its own urbanized area. It's likely that only the Lancaster County "panhandle" along Highway 521 is included in Charlotte's urbanized area and not the town of Lancaster or other towns in the county. And so on and so forth.

Thank you so much! Now I get it.

Here's the other thread. It shows you visually. 2010 Census Urban Areas Released - Big changes coming for area Metropolitan Areas

Concord, Gastonia, & Rock Hill each have their own sphere of influence, but each is tied to Charlotte. There is a link to a list, as well. Look for Charlotte, Concord, etc. Hickory is in a very weak metro & it has been given to Charlotte, but Gastonia is actually closer, as Lincolnton, in Lincoln County has been given to Gastonia & Maiden has been given to Lincolnton. It doesn't really matter, since Gastonia will always belong to Charlotte.

That makes it VERY clear. Thanks! Personally, though, it seems kind of wrong to include the Huntersville/Northern Mech area, but not Gastonia and Concord/Kannapolis. But I think I understand why they did that.
