I can't tell you how happy I am that I rented here before contemplating purchasing! Coming from NY and having very little square footage for a premium price has a way of making large homes and a galore of subdivisions seem all to appetizing! I was able to rent a home in nice sub-division for a decent price. Clearly something I would not be able to afford if I was back in NY. My lovely neighbors leave garbage , store circulars from two weeks ago and a whole gamut of tools and a dog they never walk around their property. I can't begin to tell you how bad it looks! I can't imagine having a thirty year mortgage and having to deal with them! Thank you city data for all the previous threads regarding this issue. I'm in no rush to buy on this block thankfully!

So glad renting has worked out for you, Gem. And now you have time to find out where you DO want to live . . .

It is hard giving advice and trying to be helpful. At times, I get discouraged b/c of the negative responses from folks thinking about moving here and not hearing what they want to hear! But for the most part, the old timers on the forum are only trying to shield newcomers from making some sad mistakes by advising them to rent, research schools, come with a job or with savings to see you through a potentially long job search, etc.

I hope you find the RIGHT SPOT and am sure you will. I have friends from NY (NYC, upstate as well as LI) and they have settled in the Mooresville area as well as Union County. Not sure why most of them are not actually in Charlotte, but they have all found great neighborhoods, schools, and are pleased. Good luck as you search for your perfect spot and welcome to North Carolina! We are grateful others are moving here and wanting to be part of the community and future growth of this region.

To avoid neighbors who allow their yards to look like a dump, you may want to consider buying in a neighborhood that has an HOA.

Thanks Anifani! Believe me the advice was well worth it! I live in a development with an HOA believe it or not. A well established and large one in Union County. I advise any of my friends looking to make the move to rent first. I love the area not the block! Coming from somewhere else and not really knowing the lay of the land didn't work for me or my family. I will gladly take the inconvenience of renting any day over buying sight unseen first.

Gem, just curious about your block. Do you think the folks would be trashing up the place no matter where they lived? Have you asked around about why the HOA is not enforcing the rules? Of course, I could understand if you were not saying a thing and just smiling cause you know you are not stuck there, hee hee. That has to give you a big sense of relief not to have to "do anything" with the slobs down the street!!!!!

I wonder if any of them are renting and so just don't care about the neighborhood or if they are just lazy and have no civic pride. Some folks think if they rent they don't have to answer to anyone and don't care what their neighbors think. I have seen it happen! But I also know homeowners who are just plain lazy and inconsiderate.

It worries me in any case -- b/c in an overall nice development, a few bad apples brings the reputation of the development down. The HOA should be stepping in to make sure people don't create a bad atmosphere for the rest of the community. Shame on them.

I'm surprised to hear that these type of neighbors are not brought on line in an HOA environment. I would definitely complain to HOA since their neglect brings down entire neighborhood (including my house).
Shame on the sloppy ones, but the rest of the neighbours have a duty to make sure the bad apples down bring everybody down.

My lovely neighbors bought brand new five years ago. It leads me to believe that their previous home looked worse. I hate to admit that they are transplanted New Yorkers. They honestly need acreage somewhere else. I know sometimes renters get a bad wrap but I sit on both sides of the fence. I still own my home up north and even though it wasn't as nice or large as my present rental I still treated it as my prized possession. Some people just don't give a crap about anything. I wish that I could drop an anonymous note about these people without the possibility of any retribution. I know the people next door to them can't be happy about the way they keep the property. It's a shame!

Yes, that is a shame, indeed. I have a feeling your neighbors just don't care and don't have a sense of pride about their property. I am like you - my home is a prized possession, a big investment. And I agree - doesn't matter if I am renting, I take pride in my surroundings and want to be a positive part of the neighborhood.

I have to admit I am surprised that no one has taken action against them for the infractions. There is no excuse to be slobs. I don't blame you for not wanting to get into a situation where someone might get nasty with you. You aren't there forever and it isn't worth the possible ramifications. People can be spiteful, even when they are in the wrong!!!!

So glad you are not stuck there, Gem!

Hip Hip Hooray I'm not stuck here!Everyone else keeps up they're property on the block which is a good thing. They have befriended a few people on the block who've also migrated from their hometown. This might be a key reason as to why the HOA hasn't got involved as of yet. My headache today but not forever.
