Today, a major city in the U.S. is voting on whether they should prevent retailers from selling sugar sweetened soda's over 16 ounces.

To those who might not think this a big deal for Charlotte, remember that NYC pioneered antismoking regulations which eventually reached the rest of the US. Likewise, I see that CLT McDonald's are starting to post calorie counts next to menu items in CLT restaurants - something that was also pioneered by NYC.

We live in a progressive city, with a progressive mayor, so I ask: what if Charlotte decided to make sugar sweetened drinks larger than 16 ounces illegal? Would this be a big deal to you?

I don't really care, but I think it's a waste of time and money. I can kind of see both sides of the issue, though. Personal responsibility, yes, but when people aren't responsible who pays the cost? I guess if it passes in NY we will see if it has any effects.

I don't see Charlotte becoming a nanny state like NYC. Comparing smoking to sodas is absurd, someone smoking a cigarette affects my clean air, while someone drinking a 32 oz soda doesn't affect me at all - unless they have a big bottom and sit next to me on an airplane

I do not like it but it will happen here eventually. Once the government has full control of our healthcare you will see all kinds of legislation on food.

One question: Does the law prevent refills? I usually don't upsize my meals due to the food being enough and free refills mean I don't need a larger size drink.

Govco knows best. No reason for a person to look after themselves when govco will do it for them. One day the sheep will wake up, and then it will be too late. The freedom their forefathers fought and died for will be gone!

In NC, Charlotte would not have the legal authority to do this on its own. In this state, Cities can't adopt new powers unless specifically authorized by the NC Legislature.

Unfortunately, at least one person already agrees with this statement by looking at the survey results. Worse yet, they probably vote.

Why not just outlaw the use of sugarcane in US foods and drinks? Wouldn't that be easier and more effective? I honestly can't tell much difference between a cake made with sugar vs. one that was made with splenda. I have a few diabetics in my family and those homemade splenda cakes are delicious. As for pop, just choose the diet version and add some cherry flavoring to it. Those new coke machines make this easy and fun.

so you want to take something that is natural, (altough refined sugar is screwed up too) and replace it with something man made that may have long term health side affects. How bout just not eating like a pig. Oh that's right that involves self control
