Hi all- relocating to Charlotte from Pittsburgh in June. Will be doing a residency at the Presbyterian Hospital. Looking for advice on where to live. Safety, walkable nightlife, easy commute to work is what were hoping for. Hoping to not spend more than $850 a month.
Also what is to expect when moving to Charlotte, if anyone could make comparisons to Pittsburgh that would be great!
Apt rents are on the rise here big time. You should be able to find a 1br for around $850. I assume you will be working at Pres. main hospital near uptown, correct? There are plenty of walkable and safe areas really close to that hospital. Elizabeth, Plaza Midwood, Southend, Myers Park (very pricey) and NoDa for starters. Finding something decent in that price range will be a challenge but not impossible. The sooner you start calling around the better.
As far as the differences between the 2 cities, well, I have only been to Pittsburgh a few times so probably cannot give you a fair comparison between the two. Pittsburgh is larger, better mass transit, and a great sports town. But if you are a Steelers fan, you won't have any problem in that dept. There are thousands of them here.
I'm from Pittsburgh and have been living here in Charlotte for almost 20 years. They are completely different cities. Since Charlotte was a very small city until fairly recently, there are few walkable urban style neighborhoods, therefore they command a premium price in a safe area. The good news is that this hospital is in the middle of some very nice walkable areas. Charlotte overall is much more suburban and car-centric. It is also cleaner and newer.
The poster above gave you good advice - I am not familiar with apartment prices here but if you can get something in the neighborhoods he mentions, it would fit your criteria.
If you have specific questions related to pittsburgh/charlotte comparisons, don't hesitate to DM me.

Will you be a recent med school graduate or completing an internship at a Pittsburgh hospital? Where are you currently living in Pittsburgh? This would give us a comparable distance for a commute.
Pharmacy residency. Currently working at UPMC PUH living in Edgewood/Regent Square area
