As newcomers move to Charlotte, they are always interested in what will grow in our area and what to expect to bloom seasonally. So, tell me, what's blooming, Charlotte?

We've had an unusually rainy and cold winter/spring. It's April 6 and in my yard the daffodils are almost done, the pansies are loving the cooler temps, so they look beautiful, the yellow forsythia is in full bloom, the oak trees are budding, the Bradford pears have finished blooming and have started with their green leaves, and the dogwoods and azaleas are in bud. How about you?

Respond with the date and what's blooming, Charlotte...

April 6th - forsythia, dogwoods, and cherry tree are blooming in my yard. Daffodils and several early lilies are about over! My "saucer magnolias" (also called tulip tree) were beautiful but got frost bitten the other week . . . so turned brown.

I am moving and while at the New house cleaning up, I saw that the cherry blossom trees are in bloom. The whole side of the house has these tall hydrangeas bushes that are all covered in green shoots and all the unfortunate bradford pear trees are in full bloom all through the area. Sigh. (highly allergic to them) April 5.

Cherry trees are in full bloom here. Need to start thinking about planting tomatoes & peppers soon.

April 6. Narcissus, cherry tree, blueberries, and sugar snap peas are in full bloom. Hellebore is still going strong and the autumn ferns are sending up new fronds.

Gonna put a little down east twist on small garden this year....butter beans, sweet corn, okra, and mustard greens...wifey handles all that flowery stuff. I do miss the Azalea Festival in Wilmington which is next week by the way.

These are hot weather plants so I'll probably wait a couple of weeks at the earliest. Young plants like this, at least the varieties that I have, can be shocked by cool weather overnight.

It's getting a little late for mustard greens (my favorite green) though you might still have time if you plant this week. This is a fall and very early spring plant that will bolt quickly once the temps are in the 80s.
